As many folks know, and some are finding out, vape pens are able to be used for a range of different compounds. While some people might not realize it, it’s more accurate to think about a vape pen as similar to a pipe – it’s a tool you use to inhale whatever. Following up on last month’s CBD discussion we thought we’d talk a bit about another potential match for a vape pen – DMT.
What is DMT?
N, N-dimethyltryptamine, or DMT is a naturally occurring compound in many different plants. It is a hallucinogenic drug that produces similar effects to hallucinogenic mushrooms or LSD.
Is DMT Ayahuasca?
Sort of! Ayahuasca is traditionally made with two plants called Psychotria viridis and Banisteriopsis caapi. The former contains DMT while the latter contains MAOIs. MAOIS prevent specific enzymes in your body from breaking down the DMT, when used in conjunction it produces a longer-lasting trip. That’s why ayahuasca is usually associated with a ‘ceremony.’

The Legality of DMT?
First, let’s address the elephant in the room: ‘isn’t DMT illegal?’
DMT is an illegal substance in the United States, a Schedule I controlled substance, meaning it is illegal to make, buy, sell, possess, or distribute it. It’s a bit tricky, right? While DMT is illegal, ayahuasca the ‘finished’ product isn’t. That further complicates matters.
At least, at the moment. In the past two years, some cities throughout the US have decriminalized it. While it’s still illegal under state and federal law, this means that these cities treat the possession or use of it like a minor traffic violation – no arrest, prison time, or criminal records.
So, if you’re in one of those cities where DMT has been decriminalized (or you’re traveling to one of the several countries around the world where it is legal) let’s move on to the topic at hand, vaping DMT.
Why Vape DMT?
There are a few reasons someone might prefer to vape DMT. The traditional methods are drinking it as a part of a shaman’s brew or smoking it from a glass pipe. The problem with smoking through a glass pipe is a bit obvious, there’s a bit of a stigma attached to that, feels worse than it is. As for ingesting DMT as a part of an ayahuasca ceremony, well, it’s a ceremony. That makes it a whole to-do, and the trip lasts a long time.
